It might seem like an obvious thing to say, but at the city's newest cafe, it really is all about the coffee.

While everyone from Dunkin' Donuts to Starbucks touts their superior blends, a recent visit to Casaroma's cozy new downtown spot found that, in this case, the proof is in the cup.

All of a sudden, coffee shops are sprouting up in — or next to — apartment buildings. The majority (so far) are in New Rochelle, which counts three, specifically in the Modera, Stella and The Huguenot. There's also newly opened ones in The Castle in Port Chester, Centro Larchmont in Larchmont and Harrison Playhouse Lofts in Harrison. All six are under a year old.

Based on outward appearances, the sleek and contemporary new Huguenot building downtown doesn't seem like a mom-and-pop business, but once through the spotless glass doors, it starts to become clear that this is a different sort of place than the luxury towers that have dramatically changed the New Rochelle skyline in the past few years.

As New Rochelle booms and reinvents itself as a city on the rise, the citizens have to run on something other than the standard cup of joe. These three new cafes in the Queen City of the Sound are bringing new flavors and inspiration to a place on the precipice of revitalization.

Winter has traditionally been a slow time for restaurant openings. But not this year. This past month has seen an explosion of new spots across Westchester offering everything from Mexican food to Greek cuisine to a menu filled with Mediterranean Persian influences. That's on top on two new coffee shops (plus another one coming!), a ramen shop and a pizzeria.

An update for a Mount Kisco favorite, a steakhouse in White Plains, a handful of new coffee shops, and more make the month delicious.
